Great article, reminds me of essay from Jonathan Franzen, "I Just Called to Say I Love You". Cell Phones, Sentimentality, and the3 decline of Public Space.

Balance between online and offline is a must!

I teach Face-to-Face Networking and talk about this all of the time. For my last presentation I placed my phone on the table just before I started speaking. When I got to the misuse of smartphones, I asked if it bothered anyone that I had put my phone down in front of me. You should have heard the conversation that was unleashed.

No question the use of our phones has gotten out of hand....my own response. Turn it on silent the minute I walk out the door and only use IF I end up waiting for the next appointment.

Thanks for reading Jeff. You're right, I caught myself several times while writing this piece thinking about 1) ET going home or 2) seeing Happy Gilmore yell at his phone to "go to your home!"

Hi Amber -- you're spot-on. I wouldn't suggest completely alienating yourself from useful technology, but there's certainly a point where hedges need to be drawn. Thanks for reading!

This is a TIMELY post! I've been pondering the "addiction" I have to my iPhone, and have racked my brain trying to figure out a way to "live with out it". Bottom line- Sure! I could live with out it. But, technology is a necessary evil these days. I love your approach on how to " tame the smartphone monster. "

Great post, Ryan! I like the idea of simply giving your phone a home (almost has an ET irony to it).

Thank you Sarah -- you're spot on with "real life doesn't happen inside an electronic device."

I'm all for leveraging technology to assist our productivity, but it's when it gets in the way of us being human that there's a problem.
