From Someday to Action!

And I Can’t Remember the Movie

http://www.sxc.hu/photo/31490
It was simple thing. I had gone to a movie with a friend.

The story was grand, sweeping, moving. The sets were outstanding. The cinematography was well-directed and beautiful. As we left the theater, my head was filled with images of the movie and the grand mansion that the characters lived in.

My friend was walking alongside me talking about the characters. They were well-cast in a story well-told, but I was distracted as sometimes happens. Suddenly, thinking of the mansion with the mahogany tables, I blurted out, “One day, I’m going to have fresh flowers in every room in my house too.”

Being a friend, my friend went with the conversation. She commented that fresh flowers do add to the mood and ambiance of a space. But I was still thinking.

I stopped in my tracks and said, “What’s this some day? … one day? It’s long time since I’ve been old enough to choose to eat ice cream for breakfast if I want. What am I waiting for? When is the day I’ll give myself permission?”

So my friend, who is my friend, drover her car from the theater to the nursery and that day I started a garden.

It’s not hard to get from someday to action.

It starts with figuring out that you can give yourself permission.

What could you put into action just by giving yourself permission?

Yep. This is something I think a lot of people do.

With the rocky economy, I’ll bet a lot of people are saying “someday.” Which is why I think this site is so fabulous and you are all great people for putting these thoughts out there.

I’m sure before the economy fell to pieces, a lot of people felt like they were on the verge of their someday. Now, that day might seem further away than ever. “I can’t go on that trip – I’m not sure I’ll still have a job in 2 weeks!” “I can’t buy that new piece of furniture. What if the kids get sick!”

Maybe the “someday” is always tied to a “what if.” And the what if can be either positive or negative. You said, “What if I had flowers in every room?” And then you acted on it. But a lot of times what if is like the goalie in front of that someday goal. I can’t do this because what if…

Sometimes, you have to just eat dessert before eating your brussels sprouts.

    Hi Marjorie!
I think that “someday when I grow up” starts when we’re kids and in our society we don’t get that marking place that says “You’re a grownup now. Go for it!” Each of has to decide that on our own. It’s interesting to see when we get here, if we do.

Personally, I leave all my brussels sprouts for someone else. :)

Liz, you are so right about this. Permission. Permission to have fresh flowers in every room, even if nobody you know does it. Permission to have pancakes for supper. Permission to NOT conquer the world on Mondays, to ease into the day. Permission to work a 4-day or a 3-day work week — even in this economy. Permission to raise your rates — even in this economy. Permission to do less of what drags you down and more of what lights you up. Even if most of the people you know aren’t doing that. One small change. Fresh flowers. It can open up all kinds of other changes. I’m with you!

    Great message, Liz.

I think it is human nature to be complacent and get into routine. I try to do as many things as possible while I still can.

My wife and I went to an Alaskan cruise because we didn’t want to keep saying, “someday.” We were a newly married couple and most of the people on the cruise were much older. We had such a blast!

Now I always feel proud when I tell people we went. We always get people responding that they have always wanted to go.

    Thanks for the reminder.

    Hi Kat!
I love your “permission NOT to conquer the world on Mondays.” Exactly. It’s your life. We only get one of them and we ought to take that seriously. We get to pick. Rules of the Neighborhood. Only thing is we have to be willing to take what happens when we do. So picking for what helps us thrive is a good idea. Glad to have you!

    Hi JB!
Good on you for making something happen. So often we wait for good things to happen to us. Then we wonder why nothing does. You took the world and made it yours. Keep doing that. It pays off.

There is no such thing as “someday” and yet we expend mountains of energy worrying about, planning for, and pining for “someday.”
There is magic in the moment when we discover that we don’t have to wait – that we can Do Something Right Now. Suddenly, a world of possibilities appears where before there were only walls. The moment you take the smallest action, you begin to tear down the assumptions about having to wait for Someday.
I work (and play!) at this each day. I feel so strongly about it, that I have included “Suddenly” in all my projects and even in my own online name … as a reminder to myself.
“Suddenly” is the moment you decide you can have the flowers now, the moment you realize you can start that business you’ve always dreamed about, the moment you discover that it’s all there inside you & all you have to do is put it in motion.
And that’s when the magic happens. ;)
